PROTECT THE PLANET

IMPROVING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF OUR PACKAGING, BUSINESS OPERATIONS AND FACTORIES TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE PLANET.

Looking good doesn’t have to cost the earth

There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes before your new ‘fit arrives at your door, and if we’re not careful, that journey from designer to production to Polly customer can have a substantial environmental footprint.

The good news is, we are super careful about this – because we believe looking good shouldn’t be at the expense of the planet. Our Protect the Planet impact area is all about monitoring and reducing the impact of our production, operations and packaging, with a big focus on circularity.

Princess Polly is a participant of the United Nations Global Compact, and has aligned our Earth Club mission with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Within our Protect the Planet impact area, we are focused on four Sustainable Development Goals where we believe we can best contribute to:

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

OUR COMMITMENTS:

We are serious about circularity. For us, circular fashion is all about creating smartly designed and great quality products in line with demand, helping you take care and keep them for longer, and providing you all the right resources to give them a second life when it’s time to say goodbye.

We’re proud that our garments are made from high quality materials – which means that with a bit of TLC, your favorite Princess Polly pieces can last season after season. Our Care Guide is a first step in giving you all the right resources to keep your fav pieces looking fresh and fab (and the planet will thank you, too!).

When you no longer wear your items, this doesn’t have to be the end of the story either. We’re committed to educating our customers on the best options to give these pieces another life: it may be with a new owner, by reselling or donating, or by recycling the materials to turn them into something new. We’ll do our part to make this as easy as possible, and with the help of partners, will enable collection channels for used or damaged items in our largest markets by 2023.

To learn more about our other Primary Commitments, visit the Princess Polly Earth Club Hub.

Our big goal is zero; zero net carbon emissions and zero waste to landfill. With the help of some incredible experts, we calculated our carbon emissions for the whole of 2020. This data helps us set ambitious and exciting goals for the future of Princess Polly!

As part of our commitment as a participant in the United Nations Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, we're dedicated to reducing our carbon emissions by a minimum of 30% by 2030. We're also working towards:

  • Net zero emissions from our entire supply chain before 2030
  • Our global offices and warehouses being carbon neutral by 2023
  • Zero waste to landfill by 2025. That includes damaged return product

CIRCULARITY

Princess Polly is – and has always been – a proudly demand-driven business, meaning that we only manufacture products in small quantities based on customer demand. This means that we’re able to avoid creating excess items when they’re not needed. Love that for us!

We design for quality and fit - what that means for you, is that you’ll love your product for longer! We are making a conscious effort to produce with the earth in mind by prioritizing sustainable materials in our range such as recycled polyester, recycled nylon or organically grown cotton every month.

We care about our earth and how our customers look after their fav clothes, that’s why we’ve created a guide to love your wardrobe longer all while being sustainable!

TAKING BACK

We get it. Your style changes more than your mood, and sometimes we outgrow pieces that were once our go-to. But this doesn’t have to be the end of the story – those pieces can have another life, whether that’s with a new owner or recycling the materials to turn them into something new. We’re working to create a collection channel for your used or damaged items by 2023.

OUR PACKAGING

If we could magically transport your ‘fit to your wardrobe without any additional waste, we would! However, our packaging is what helps us get your new clothes safely to you. The good news is, we’re committed to making as little impact on the planet as possible, which is why we’ve made the switch to 100% recycled content and recyclable packaging.

With your feedback we’ve recognized that recyclable bags are much easier for you to dispose of! Plus, compared to regular plastic mailer bags, our recyclable packaging produces just ¼ of the carbon emissions; love that for us!

Simply drop your recyclable bag into any soft plastics bin at your local supermarket! In some US states (including LA) you can pop it straight into the regular recycling bin, just be sure to check the signage first.

If you receive one of our older compostable bags in your order, don’t worry! We’re using these to ensure nothing goes to waste; pop the bag into a compost bin and watch it turn into worm food!

TREADING LIGHTER

The materials, production methods and the processes used to get your ‘fit to your door can all contribute to a significant environmental footprint. With this knowledge, we are actively seeking and implementing alternatives that will help us reach ZERO net carbon emissions.

In 2020, our carbon baseline was 87,940 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent:

Production

Nearly half of our carbon footprint in 2020 was emissions from the production of our product and packaging. This includes everything from the yarn production to the final manufacture and wash of our products before they make their way to our warehouse. Our Earth Club range uses lower impact material alternatives and we can’t wait to see these help reduce our carbon footprint. The production of all of our polybags and mailer bags is also completely offset.

Transport

30% of our carbon emissions are from transport, including shipping products from our factories to our warehouses, delivering your packages to you, and taking back any returns. We offset all our deliveries around the world and are always working on solutions to cut down on returns and exchanges, such as our FitFinder program.

Operations

We calculated the emissions from all of our operations, including powering our offices and warehouses, commuting and travel, waste and much more. By 2023, we’re committed to switching our offices and warehouses to renewable energy and making sure these buildings are carbon neutral.

Use Phase

20% of our carbon footprint comes from you guys loving our garments and keeping them fresh. We’re focused on finding new ways to help our Polly gals care for their clothes while also reducing the associated emissions. See our blog posts for care guidance.

Product End-of-Life

When you’re ready to say goodbye to your Polly products, where they go next can also have some carbon impacts. We’re committed to educating our customers on the best options to give these pieces another life. See our circularity commitment for more.

WASTE

We’re always on the lookout for new ways to improve our own waste footprint at Princess Polly.

In 2020, we completed a waste audit for our Australian offices and distribution centres to check where we can reduce our rubbish and find new ways to keep it out of landfill. One way we’ll do this is by introducing composting facilities at both our US and Australian offices in 2021 to make conscious living a breeze for our team.

WHAT'S COMING UP

  • Calculate our carbon baseline for 2020 and set ambitious reduction targets (completed during 2021)
  • Collaborate with 5 factories annually to pilot projects to reduce their environmental footprint
  • Global offices and distribution centres will be powered by 100% renewable energy
  • Global offices and distribution centres will be entirely carbon neutral. We will reduce our emissions and offset the balance
  • With the help of relevant partners, support collection channels for used or damaged items for consumers in our two largest markets
  • All consumer facing packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable
  • Be 100% zero-waste. Any waste generated in our offices and distribution centres will be reused, recycled or composted
  • Reduce our carbon emissions by a minimum of 30%
  • Achieve net zero emissions (or carbon neutrality) across our entire supply chain
